The date display is a complication we often take for granted. A small aperture or an arrangement of numbers around the dial with a pointer hand… there’s really only so many ways this information can be conveyed quickly at a glance. With the Krayon Anywhere, we find a new approach, however, and it’s one that lays the entire month out around the perimeter of the dial, but not like a traditional pointer date system. Rather, it breaks the months into weekends and weekdays, so you also get a day of the week complication at no extra charge. Krayon call it a ‘mechanical planner’, giving the wearer five-week visibility at a glance, and now, it’s available in rose gold.

The Anyday sets its novel complication within a 39mm case that measures just 9.5mm in thickness. Rendered in rose gold for the first time, the case features an array of interesting details from the stepped lug to the lipped bezel and bowed walls. There’s a soft, organic quality to the case that reads even softer in this material, aided by the demure anthracite grey dial treatment. Compared to the white gold and blue dial example released previously, this variation of the Anyday reveals a very different personality, and it works just as well, which is a sign of a sound base design.

Still, the dial is the real focal point here. An elevated central plate bears the “Y” logo rendered in a recessed pattern, while the perimeter sits a level down and gets an off-white finish. The date discs rotate to shift the weekly displays, with the days of the week in black, and the weekend days in clear. They call it a mechanical planner because you get a sense of the month at a glance, and can quickly discern which day of the week any particular date might be. The display requires manual adjustments on months that don’t contain 31 days.

A series of dots at the bottom of the dial give you a read on the first week of the upcoming month, as well as the end of the previous month. All adjustments are made through the crown courtesy of the 378 component caliber C032. The movement is finished beautifully with a unique wave pattern adorning the broad plates visible through an exhibition back. The works of the mechanism are apparent at the bottom of the movement, with the arms receiving a bush and polished chamfer. Internal angles abound for a deceptively complex level of detail.

As a whole, this watch is one that continues to surprise. What appears relatively straightforward at a glance reveals itself in layers, and it’s all done with a unique, practical experience in mind for the wearer. Krayon has a wonderfully unique visual DNA and this Anyday continues to explore its boundaries in new ways. Thoughtful mechanical considerations are integrated seamlessly, and never compromise the design goals. A new case metal for an existing watch is rarely interesting, but here, it manages to find something a little extra in rose gold. Krayon
