Today marks what would have been the 94th birthday of American adventure novelist, Clive Cussler, and to honor the man’s work, Doxa is introducing a new Sub 750T Clive Cussler edition. This watch is the third in a series of watches dedicated to Cussler from Doxa, and if you ask me, the most compelling of the bunch. This 750T brings many of the best features of Doxa’s iconic divers into focus, and welcomes the NUMA (National Underwater and Marine Agency) mark to the dial where you might typically find the Aqualung branding. It’s everything you want from a limited edition Doxa diver, with none of the cheesy stuff thrown in to muddle the water.

Cussler was a prolific author, having entered the New York Time’s fiction best-seller list no less than 20 times, but he did more than just flesh out fictional adventures for Dirk Pitt, he was also a prolific adventurer in his own right. In 1979, Cussler co-founded the National Underwater and Marine Agency (named for the fictional government agency that first appeared in his 1973 novel, The Mediterranean Caper) as a non-profit organization that aids in underwater archeology and survey. The organization has been involved in expeditions recovering, or attempting to recover dozens of ships, carrying on the legacy of preservation and adventure set forth by Cussler throughout his life.

It is this spirit of exploration that takes front and center in the Clive Cussler edition Doxa watches, but this time, rather than the on the nose use of a compass bearing symbol, they’ve taken the route of using the NUMA logo on the iconic orange dial. This feels more inline with what we’d expect from the brand historically, and feels less like a novelty as a result. Clive Cussler’s name still appears on the dial, but it has been removed from the bezel assembly, so this is a far more discreet execution overall.

The watch makes use of a 45mm steel cushion shaped case, though at just 47mm from end to end, it’s very manageable on the wrist. Further, the watch measures a relatively svelte 11.95mm in thickness. As the name suggests, it gets a 750 meter depth rating, and the dual plane saw tooth bezel indexed to the minutes, and a depth scale corresponding to the minutes safe to remain there. It’s all a familiar setup, and it’s fixed to a classic beads of rice style bracelet.

The Doxa Sub 750T Clive Cussler edition will be limited to just 94 examples produced, and is priced from $2,990. The watch comes with special packaging commemorating Cussler, and is available now directly from Doxa.
