The MoonSwatch Finds Inspiration Closer to Home with New ‘Mission On Earth’ Trio

The Omega x SWATCH MoonSwatch collection gets a bit bigger this week with the addition of three new references that look to our own small slice of terrestrial real estate for inspiration. The new watches are dubbed the Mission On Earth collection, and arrive in three different colorways modeled after three color palettes found (or viewed) here on earth. The results are, as you might expect, just as vibrant and interesting as we’ve seen elsewhere in the MoonSwatch stable. The MoonSwatch project as a whole is over two years old, and this latest collection proves it’s still got plenty of gas in the tank.

The Mission To Earth collection consists of three new Speedmaster MoonSwatch watches: Lava, Polar Lights, and Desert. Each goes all in on their respective themes with big colors represented in the dial, case, and strap – but there’s another detail that sets these three watches apart from their counterparts, and that’s the radially oriented indexes surrounding the sub dials, a call back to the Alaska project II and III. It’s a small detail but it makes a noticeable difference in the overall personality, while taking a backseat to the big colors at work.

Kicking the collection off is the Lava colorway, featuring rich oranges against a black base. There’s a hint of Ultraman in here, but these colors take things a step further still. The inspiration here are the geologically active lava fields and volcanoes producing the glowing red molten rock, and the watch represents the drama in a big way, using the color from the case, to the hands, to the stitching in the strap.

The Polar Lights colorway takes a similar route, but uses a turquoise color for the case and hands. The color itself is meant to evoke the Aurora Borealis, and to further drive that point home the dial itself has been given a starry backdrop that looks a bit like aventurine. It’s a beautiful execution that pushes the base design into unfamiliar territory, but it works just as well here, particularly with the contrasting rings framing each sub dial.

Finally, the most demure of the bunch is the Desert colorway. This one takes a more monochromatic approach, with varying values of a sandy colorway providing just enough contrast to present the design. This is likely the most versatile presentation here, but these watches aren’t really trying to be a practical everyday option, they are meant to be fun. And for that reason, you might find more to enjoy in the other two examples.

All three of these watches will join the regular production family of the MoonSwatch collection, however they will continue to be available exclusively from Swatch Boutiques. These watches will elicit a more excited response when they are made available online, and accessible for all, but until then, you’ll have to keep scouring the second hand sites if you don’t happen to live near a Swatch boutique.
