Sinn revealed new additions to multiple collections last week, including a U50 Hydro which we’ll take a look at in an upcoming article, and a new 103 chronograph, the St Ty Hd, which gets some sublime details honoring the watch’s illustrious past. The 103 is an iconic chronograph that’s helped define Sinn’s approach to tool watches since the ‘60s, and it holds an important place in the modern Sinn catalog as well. The newest 103 is a classic take on the icon platform, combining elements of its past in a way that also moves the watch forward.
The 103 St Ty Hd is fitted with a manually winding movement, something we haven’t seen from Sinn in 20 years. You might think that move would equate to a thinner case, but you’d be wrong. The steel case measures 41mm in diameter and 14.8mm in thickness, but these watches have never really been about chasing a trim package. This is a muscular case that presents as straightforward as possible. It’s comfortable in its own skin, you could say. With a lug to lug length just over 47mm, this should still be plenty wearable for most of us.
Another surprise move is the use of a shock resistant acrylic crystal who’s dome accounts for a fair bit of that thickness. The tachymeter is moved in toward the dial a bit within the contrasting rehaut to avoid any distortion caused by the dome. A pilot’s bezel rendered in black frames the black and cream colored dial with red accents.
The dial itself is presented in reverse panda fashion, with a black base and light sub dials housing the running seconds and totalizers. The 30 minute totalizer gets a red and black accent track in its first 10 minute segment. Applied hour markers offer plenty of contrast against the black base, and in total present a very easy to read dial that’s been spaced out in an ergonomic fashion.
The new Sinn 103 St Ty Hd is limited to 1000 units, and will be priced at $2,870. Sinn
