Earlier this year H. Moser announced a partnership with Alpine racing, including their F1 team, which would see their logo placed on the drivers’ helmets, and on the A524 car itself. The first watch to come as a result of the partnership was revealed at round 5 of the Formula 1 calendar in Shanghai in the form of a Streamliner Cylindrical Tourbillon Skeleton and a synthetic blue corundum at 12 o’clock acting as the dial. We’re getting a follow up to that release at the round 6 Miami GP, and this one takes its color inspiration from the other half of the car’s livery: pink. The new watch will be even more limited than the 100 piece blue example, with just 21 units planned for production, 1 of which will be sold at auction for charity, with the proceeds going to AQUA PEARLS established by BWT, another of Alpine’s sponsors, and the brand responsible for the pink seen on the car’s livery.
The newest expression of the Streamliner is perhaps its most dramatic yet thanks to the use of bright colors and the fully opened up dial working in concert with the cylindrical tourbillon of the HMC 811 movement. There’s a lot to take in here at glance, and it’s still a bit jarring to see the Streamliner without its trademark integrated bracelet, but it works better than you might imagine. The pink rubber strap alters the personality of the design in a way that imbues a level of informality on the wrist, though it’s worth noting that buyers will have the option to fit the watch with a bracelet in addition to the strap.
The steel case measures just over 42mm, but thanks to its shape and the lugless design it wears a bit smaller than that number suggests. The pebble-like shape of the case nestles into the wrist comfortably with no real hard edges to speak of, while the domed sapphire arches dramatically over the fireworks underneath. This watch boasts a 12 ATM depth rating, which is approximately 400 feet, meaning you might be inclined to think of this in the same vein as MB&F’s Evo collection of watches, certainly high-end, but able to withstand the rigors of your daily activities.
A view into the dial reveals the real star of the show here, which starts at the top with a pink synthetic corundum hosting the hour and minute hand. This domed disc is vibrant, while also retaining enough transparency to create a real sense of depth. It’s dynamic, and while it might not be the most legible solution, it fits with the theme perfectly and presents as a unique aesthetic vision brought to life. The hands get Globolight inserts to track against SuperLumiNova hour markers making for an equally compelling view in low light.
A fully opened up movement provides a view clear to the other side at the right angles, with dramatically arched bridges connecting the gaps between. This culminates in the cylindrical tourbillon at 6 o’clock, which is held in place by a blue bridge, accenting the hands as well as the pink theme throughout the rest of the watch. The cylindrical balance uses two Breguet overcoils, and its dimensionality is apparent at a glance, inviting a closer look from a multitude of angles. H. Moser is one of very few brands that produces their own hairsprings, and they’ve put that knowhow on full display here in the most dramatic way possible.
The Streamliner Cylindrical Tourbillon Skeleton Pink does exactly what it says on the tin, and with only 20 being produced it will likely be a rare sight in the wild. At its core this is an impressive bit of watchmaking that isn’t afraid to bring some levity to the table, and the result is all the better for it. The price of this Streamliner is set at $89,000.
We’ll have more from Miami soon, including a full photo report that we’re producing in partnership with Robb Report. Stay tuned.
