Christopher Ward Hints at the Future of the Bel Canto with New LE

The C1 Bel Canto was a revelation when it was released in early 2022. Christopher Ward had designed an original chiming watch featuring a novel take on the complication within a design that echoed the same intrigue found much higher up the independent watchmaking scene. The watch single handedly shifted the conversation around value and expectations, a conversation that’s only deepened in the subsequent years. As many legacy brands are positioning themselves as luxury manufacturers and pricing their watches accordingly, there are a growing number of ‘micro-brands’ putting forth innovative ideas that represent a huge amount of value, and Christopher Ward’s Bel Canto is chief among them.

We’ve seen a variety of limited edition variations of the Bel Canto release over the past year, including different dial colors and finishes, and even some private collaboration runs in the process. This year, they are kicking things off with a Limited Edition to benefit the Association of British Watch and Clockmakers, in which Christopher Ward CEO and co-founder, Mike France plays a pivotal role. The latest Bel Canto pays tribute to this relationship, and to all members of the ABWC in the process.

This is the Bel Canto 9324, and within its deep blue dial you’ll find a laser etched Union Jack that’s defined by a series of different finishes. It’s subtle, but beautifully captured without overpowering the rest of the watch. In addition to this, the elevated sub dial at 12 o’clock which hosts the hour and minute hands now welcomes Roman numerals at the cardinal positions, and they work quite well. Of the design, Mike France has this to say: “This very British Bel Canto covers new ground and offers an insight into the future development of the collection”.

Everything on the southern portion of the dial remains the same, with the visible striking mechanism in full view, chiming at the top of each hour. This can be turned off the press of a button at 5 o’clock on the case. It’s an exciting watch, even a few years later, and given its resounding popularity, it seems a sure bet that Christopher Ward are working on a follow up.

Just 10 examples of this Bel Canto will be produced. Christopher Ward will be using a raffle system to select the buyers, ensuring equal chances for all interested parties. The proceeds of the watch will benefit the Association of British Watch and Clockmakers, aiding their goals in the preservation and continuation of their community. Christopher Ward
