Christopher Ward C1 Bel Canto Gets Glow Up in New Lumière Edition

The C1 Bel Canto has come a long way since first storming onto the scene back in 2022, and has undoubtedly given way to a new sub genre within the small independent brand scene in the process. Christopher Ward has embraced a uniquely creative approach to their watches, placing a premium on the emotional experience around our watches, and in the process bringing unconventional design to the masses. Last year, the brand revealed the “Lumière” moniker in the C60 collection, boasting heavy use of Globolight lume, something recently followed through in the C63 Extreme GMT. This week, we’re getting a C1 Bel Canto Lumière that brings out a whole new personality from Christopher Ward’s chiming wonder.

The C1 Bel Canto has been pushed in a few directions since it was first introduced. From different colors used in the base dial plate, to textures seen in the Classic. They’ve even pulled off a few community limited editions. With the Lumière, the Bel Canto looks like it’s taken a trip to the Grid and returned with a full glow up. The elevated dial ring and hands take center stage here, rendered completely in Globolight ceramic lume. It’s a showstopper that emphasizes the watches unique layout rather than the mechanical widgetry happening along the bottom portion of the dial.

Rays of lume emanate from the dial, underpinning the mechanics of the chiming mechanism, and fade from green to blue at the extremities. The whole design feels geared toward the experience it provides in the dark, and the result is a Bel Canto unlike any before it. The area underneath the elevated ring appears as a gulf in the dark, maximizing the drama between the hands themselves and the rest of the dial. There are no hour markers or index rings in play, it’s a purely conceptual experience.

Viewing the watch in normal light conditions provides a very different experience. The base of the dial is teal, so it keeps a vibrant palette intact regardless. Strips of lume are applied directly to that base dial in three segments, and in daylight, offer their own quality to the design as a whole. Though the effect is obviously less wondrous in well lit conditions. This is a watch that will have you looking for dark spaces, especially just in from a sunny day. This also feels like one of those watches that will have you incorporating a small black light into your EDC.

At its core, the rest of this Bel Canto remains largely familiar, with the brand’s FS01 module placed within a 41mm titanium case. The chiming mechanism gets the same level of finish and presents as well as you’d expect, though I do think a black-out or rhodium treatment would have gone a long way here to enhance the Tron aesthetic a bit further. Just how that mechanism evolves in future iterations of the Bel Canto will be quite curious. Thankfully, Christopher Ward is plenty keen on taking chances. The C1 Bel Canto Lumière is available now, and is priced at $4,840 on a lume infused rubber strap, and $5,205 on a steel bracelet. Christopher Ward
