Some collabs just feel right, and it’s no surprise to see the two parties involved go back for subsequent rounds. In this case, it’s Zodiac teaming up with the stylish folks at Rowing Blazers for their take on a cinematic fictional classic. The result is this black and blue Super Sea Wolf World Time GMT featuring a double signed dial and a few easter eggs to find along the way. It presents as classic, while at the time time not taking itself too seriously, something both of the brands are pretty good at. This is the second collab between Zodiac and Rowing Blazers just this year, and this one is seasonally on point.
This particular Zodiac Super Sea Wolf was inspired by the ’80s Christmas classic, Trading Places, and the infamous “Rochefoucauld” described by Louis Winthorpe III as portrayed by Dan Aykroyd in the film. The down on his luck stockbroker attempts to pawn the watch in a time of need, whipping out one of the most audacious watch descriptions ever put to film (“It tells time simultaneously in Monte Carlo, Beverly Hills, London, Paris, Rome, and Gstaad!“). The result is a world timer with your typical ring of cities representing different time zones across the world, only this one includes all of the cited cities, and even makes room for Philadelphia, being the location of the pawn shop itself.
This wonderful nod to the film is even better when you realize that 4 of those cities are in the same time zone. The solution feels natural to the rest of the watch, and while it doesn’t hit over the face with its inspiration, it does enough for a decent pay off to a keen eye. Operating the watch is a much more standard STP 7-20 automatic movement made by Zodiac’s proprietary manufacture. It features a caller-style GMT hand, meaning it’s slaved to the hour hand, as well as a date aperture at 3 o’clock. The classic Rowing Blazer logo is placed at 6 o’clock on the dial.
Just 282 examples of this collaboration will be produced, and available through Rowing Blazers directly for the price of $2,195. It ships on a steel bracelet and with an additional black and white fabric strap. It might be the perfect holiday companion should you find yourself in need of $50 passing through Philadelphia over the holiday. Rowing Blazers.
