Timex Introduces New Giorgio Galli S2Ti in Titanium

Timex is pushing their Giorgio Galli collaboration into new territory this week with the release of the fully titanium S2Ti, further building on the conceptual framework that began with the original S2 released in 2023, and the S1 released in 2019. This watch represents a return to Swiss watchmaking for Timex, but more than that, it’s an expression of Giorgio Galli’s transcendent design language. With the S2Ti, the design takes on a monotone execution that highlights the natural tones of titanium, and it should come as no surprise that the design holds up just as well. There’s a few surprises thrown in here for good measure, and the net result is the most expensive S2 to date, at $1,950, so it’s worth asking if the value is still there.

The S2Ti is a familiar package, with a design that adheres to the original S2. That’s a very good thing as the subtle design feels perfectly executed, and takes on an entirely new personality when rendered in a single tone. The flat grey dial is just a stop lighter than the surrounding metals, allowing for a legible dial to take shape. The hour markers are still relegated to a single metal ring framing the dial, with no other markings in sight. It’s a sterile experience that’s exacerbated by the lack of contrast.

What separates this S2 is the use of titanium for the case and bracelet, which has received a uniform brushed finish throughout. The natural warm tone of the metal comes through here, which feels very intentional, and the only contrast comes from the midcase section, which is visible through the open case walls. That midcase is actually reinforced with forged carbon fiber, and appears black when viewed from the side.

The case itself measures 38mm in diameter, and 12mm in thickness and houses a Sellita caliber SW200-1 automatic movement, which is visible through an exhibition caseback. An SW300 would seem a more appropriate choice here, especially at this asking price, and it’s a change I’d like to see made as this collection evolves further.

The most interesting unseen feature of this watch can be found in the bracelet, which can be sized without the use of tools. The edge links can be pulled out by hand, allowing the rods holding the links in place can be removed on the fly. It’s called the I-Size system, and it represents the kind of creative thinking we need more of across the industry. Without having used it, I can’t speak further to its effectiveness, but the idea alone is quite compelling.

Does all of this add up to a watch that’s worth nearly $2,000? Well, there are plenty of full titanium watches on the market that can be had for less, from the likes of Citizen, Nivada Grenchen, Autodromo, and many others, so what sets this apart? The bracelet system and forged carbon midcase that is set within a case that features plenty of complex shapes may have something to do with it. Further, the S2Ti is a limited edition release that will see just 500 examples produced. Whatever your thoughts on the price, I’m just happy to see Timex and Girogio Galli continue to push this concept into new territory, and it’s something I hope they continue to do. Timex
