Well, this was fast. Not even two weeks ago Omega and SWATCH took the lid off of their Snoopy MoonSwatch, an all-white affair with a moon phase indication featuring the Snoopy character. This week, we get the follow up in all-black, but that’s not the only difference worth noting. The new Snoopy MoonSwatch comes just days before the pink new moon on April 8th, a phase that sees the moon’s illuminated side facing the Sun, and the night side facing Earth, rendering it ‘invisible’ in the night sky. The latest MoonSwatch is a near perfect contrast to the first Snoopy rendition, and you’ll be able to nab one from, you guessed it, April 8th.
The full black execution here makes plenty of sense as a launch pairing against the all-white, and while I suspect we may see some color introduced here at some point, these two cover the bases pretty well. The inclusion of a moon phase indication carries through to the new example, though it’s been handled slightly differently, and perhaps to even greater effect.
The aperture of the moon phase indication has been rotated 90 degrees, and the bridge the defines the shape, is now translucent. This allows the rendering of the moon, complete with Snoopy and Woodstock, visible as they make their slow rotation, and yes they still glow thanks to the generous lume application, which will also be visible through the translucent bridge piece.
This has brought a bit of drama to the dial, though in a somewhat discreet manner, but it feels all the more interesting in the manner they’ve decided to handle the moon phase. The rest of the watch remains the same, which is the inverse of the white example. The hands, dial, and bezel marking are all printed in white, with even the hour markers getting black infill to keep with the theme.
I like the idea of having both the white and black in a collection, and swapping straps between the two, but overall if it came down to a single example, the black feels a bit more approachable for everyday type wear. Do people wear a MoonSwatch everyday? I’m not sure, but they are comfortable, and when they aren’t shouting at you with big colors, they could certainly be put to frequent use with little fuss. Then again, the fuss is kind of what makes these watches so much fun in the first place, isn’t it?
The hype for Snoopy MoonSwatch is in full swing heading into the biggest week for the watch industry, and if the first iterations were any indication, expect plenty of lines at your nearest SWATCH boutique, because that’ll be your only place to nab one. The price will remain at $310, and sales will commence come April 8th, alongside the new moon. SWATCH
